Three Realms is a collaboration with Blue Nude for its AW24 Tarantula Collection, undertaken under the umbrella of my creative visual project, Studio Cosmogram. The Tarantula Collection is inspired by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the three great mysteries of creation, infinity, and oblivion, whose answers lie in cosmic exploration. The Three Realms design exploration is an artistic response to the questions and inspirations that arise when contemplating galaxies beyond our own.
The JWST’s images bring, along with scientific knowledge, a myriad of emotions. They can be positive, inspiring awe and hope with an underlying sensation of graceful humility. Alternatively, the vastness and scale of space also bring feelings of terror and loneliness. When looking at the images, the viewer is confronted with the reality of how little we know about our universe - about our own lives and place within the cosmos. These responses are categorised into the Three Realms of Mystery.
THREE REALMS OF MYSTERY
CREATION How did the universe begin? What is the meaning of life?
INFINITYWill we ever truly understand infinity
and the expanses of the universe? When does time end?
OBLIVIONIs there life after death? Is death a passing into another dimension of reality, akin to a black hole?
Studio Cosmogram’s involvement in the Tarantula Collection centres on integrating the 'three realms of mystery' into a single spiralling typographic design, embodying the trinity principle. Following extensive research into symbolism and a deep exploration of conceptual abstraction through endless graphic patterns, the finalised ‘digital couture’ design was ready for printing on structured organic cotton t-shirts.
